March 2 – Women and the Civil War

Please join us Thursday, March 2 at Jonathan’s Grille in Green Hills for a panel discussion about Women and the Civil War featuring acclaimed historian James Lee McDonough and Jim Hoobler, Senior Curator of Art and Architecture at the Tennessee State Museum. The program starts at 6:00 and is free and open to the public. Arrive early to network with members and guests, starting at 5:00. Meals and beverages are available for purchase if desired.  

February 2: What’s Cooking with Tammy Algood and Amy Lyles Wilson

Writers Amy Lyles Wilson and Tammy Algood will discuss the ingredients needed for creating successful cookbooks. From researching recipes to developing compelling stories, they’ll share what they’ve learned from their experiences as cookbook authors, whether it’s taste testing or appearing on QVC. Algood is a viticulture and wholesale produce specialist for the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Market Development Division. She has a bachelor’s of science from Mississippi State University and a master’s from Middle Tennessee State University. She writes about food for The Tennessean and The Tennessee Magazine, and has authored several cookbooks, including The Complete Southern Cookbook and Sunday Dinner in the South: Recipes to Keep Them Coming Back for More. Amy Lyles, a longtime workshop leader and teacher trained in the Amherst Writers and Artists method, has contributed to or co-authored nine books, including Bless Your Heart: Saving the World One Covered Dish at a Time, and You Be Sweet: Sharing Your Heart One Down-Home Dessert at a Time. She holds degrees from Millsaps College, the University of Mississippi, and Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and serves on the board of the Nashville chapter of WNBA.

No January Meeting

There will be no monthly meeting in January. The first meeting in 2017 will be on Thursday, February 2 at 6 pm at Jonathan’s Grille in Green Hills and will feature a discussion on cookbooks. We hope to see you there!

Please note that there will be no monthly meeting the first Thursday in October. Instead, please join us at the Coffee with Authors event at the Southern Festival of Books.

May Meeting – Garden Party

Garden Party 2012Our last meeting before our summer break will be our annual Garden Party, to be held Thursday, May 5.  Members and their guests are invited to the garden of president-elect Barbie Chadwick in Nashville to enjoy food and drinks provided by the WNBA-Nashville board. It will start at 6, with drinks and dinner at 5 if you wish to come early. Our inclement weather policy is to cancel if the Metro schools are closed.

Do book reviews still matter? Who generates them? How do such reviews impact book lovers and the publishing landscape? Join us for a lively discussion about reviews with these extraordinary panelists: author/bookseller River Jordan; novelist Patti Callahan Henry; author Jamie Blaine; and WNBA member and book reviewer Roger Bishop.
